1. Taxes, salaries, vacancy cuts make plain differences over rival N.C. GOP budgets
The GOP-led state House gave initial approval Wednesday to its two-year budget proposal. The state Senate, also led by Republicans, already has approved a spending plan for the same amount. The two chambers differ on tax cuts, teacher raises and state job reductions.
2. Lenoir day care worker charged in child’s death
A Lenoir day care has been ordered to close and a worker has been charged in connection with the death Monday of 16-month-old child. Alexandra Lee Coffey, 29, who works at Creative Beginnings of Lenoir, was arrested after authorities received information from the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
3. DA says troopers acted dishonestly after fatal Raleigh crash but won't be charged
Wake County’s district attorney says two North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers were not truthful about a deadly crash in October but won’t face criminal charges for how they handled it. Lorrin Freeman said Wednesday that a state investigation she requested into Trooper Garrett Macario and Sgt. Matthew Morrison had concluded.
