A storm system with a history of producing severe weather will track across North Carolina today.

What You Need To Know

  • Today's storm threat in North Carolina will be highest from late morning in the western Piedmont to the evening in the coastal plain

  • Damaging wind gusts will be the greatest threat from any severe storms today

  • There's also a low risk for a few brief tornadoes

A number of tornadoes were reported in Mississippi and Alabama late Wednesday

A Tornado Watch was issued for parts of North Carolina through 8 p.m.

Tornado Warnings were also issued for parts of the state.

While the system may not be as strong as it moves across the Carolinas today, severe storms are still possible.

The greatest chance came from late this morning in the western Piedmont and will go through the evening in the coastal plain.

It will be quite windy even outside of any storms with gusts up to 40 miles per hour. A few storms, though, could produce gusts up to 65 miles per hour, capable of downing trees and power lines.

While damaging winds will be the greatest threat, there's enough spin in the atmosphere that a few brief tornadoes may spin up.

Make sure you've turned on weather notifications in case severe weather happens today.

If a Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Warning is issued for your location, seek shelter in a small, interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Basements, closets, hallways and windowless bathrooms often provide the best protection during a severe storm.
