Heavy rain led to flash flooding in Southport and Jacksonville, but showers have tapered off through the afternoon. A slight chance for rain will continue tonight. Under cloudy skies, temperatures may only fall to the 60s and lower 70s by sunrise Thursday, leading to a warm and muggy morning. A few stray showers are possible early in the day.

Temperatures will climb back into the 80s again Thursday, ending up in the lower to middle 80s in the afternoon with highs in the 70s along the Outer Banks and the Crystal Coast. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible in the afternoon, and there's a marginal risk for severe weather through sunset.

More than $683 million from the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief program will go states for Helene damage.

Billionaire Elon Musk is speaking out against legislation dubbed by Republican supporters as the “big, beautiful bill” that contains some of President Donald Trump’s biggest priorities, arguing it diminishes the wide-scale federal government downsizing campaign, known as the U.S. DOGE Service, he was tasked to lead.

5. Tying it Together: North Carolina’s Innocence Inquiry Commission faces elimination, what it means

Since 2007, the Innocence Inquiry Commission has exonerated 16 people, many serving over 20 years in prison for crimes they did not commit. However, the state Senate wants to cut its funding. The commission’s leader, Laura Pierro, discusses why she thinks the state must continue funding it.
