North Carolina's Supreme Court temporarily halted enforcement on Monday of an appeals court decision that favored a Republican candidate in a close and unresolved November election for a seat on the state's highest court.
In a pair of one-sentence documents, the Supreme Court issued a temporary stay of Friday's order by a Court of Appeals panel that in part directed election workers to identify and contact potentially tens of thousands of voters whose ballots were challenged by Republican candidate Jefferson Griffin.

A Glenn High School student is recovering from stab wounds after a fight broke out there around lunchtime Monday. The injured student was taken to a hospital, while other students were told to stay inside classrooms as authorities investigated, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

3. Walk to School Day: Belmont community works to get students to school safely

Hundreds of Belmont parents and community leaders are pushing for safer walking routes to school for kids. The Belmont Police Department joined them in holding a Walk to School Day on Friday to raise awareness about the need “for improved pedestrian infrastructure near schools.”
