Today's Big Stories

1. Wildfires burn over a thousand acres across North Carolina

A 730-acre wildfire is now mostly contained at Crowders Mountain State Park, according to the North Carolina Forest Service’s website. Firefighters are battling the “Buck Creek Fire” near Lake Tahoma in Marion, N.C., spanning Mitchel and McDowell counties. The U.S. Forest Service said of the 530 acres, approximately 50% was contained at last check, but the recent rain helped.

2.  Belichick says he's had 'good conversations' with UNC chancellor amid Tar Heels' coaching search

Belichick opted not to go into more detail on ESPN's "The Pat McAfee Show." Instead, Belichick offered a quip about his reputation for giving terse responses during news conferences with the Patriots. "Yeah, let's just leave it at that, Pat," Belichick said with a grin. "I mean, I don't want to give out too much information. I want to get my press conference aura back."

3. Person of interest arrested in UnitedHealthcare CEO killing, police say

Luigi Mangione, 26, was arrested on firearms charges, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news briefing. It remains unclear if he is the same person seen on video footage opening fire on Thompson last week outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan.

4. Food recalls: What’s behind the recent rise?

"We're able to trace back more easily where the issues might have occurred," Ellen Shumaker, an N.C. State professor who studies food safety, said. "There's also just the fact that some of the recalled products recently have been ingredients in many other products.”
