Tropics

Hurricane Rafael strengthened back to a major storm in the Gulf of Mexico but remains no threat to the Southeast. The storm is expected to continue "looping" over the Gulf of Mexico through the weekend before weakening.

1. Man arrested in series of shootings on and near I-40 in Raleigh

The suspect in a dozen shootings into cars and homes on and around Interstate 40 in Raleigh has been identified as Andrew Graney, 23. Graney was arrested Thursday along with another person of interest who was later released without being charged, police said.

2. Breaking Ground: Josh Stein to become North Carolina’s first Jewish governor

Stein will join a handful of Jewish governors serving across the United States when he takes office next year.

3. Trump names campaign co-chair Susie Wiles his White House chief of staff, first woman to hold the role

Wiles helped run Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign and is widely credited with managing his most disciplined and well-executed campaign.

4. Man sentenced to more than 12 years in prison in fentanyl overdose death

Dylan Alexander Jones of Wayne County pleaded guilty to distribution of fentanyl and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
