1. Iran launches missiles at Israel in retaliation for killing Hamas, Hezbollah leaders

The Israeli military says that missiles have been launched at Israel from Iran, forcing civilians to take shelter. A series of window-shaking explosions were heard in Tel Aviv and near Jerusalem, though it was not immediately clear whether the sounds were from missiles landing or being intercepted by Israeli defenses, or both.

2. Biden to visit North Carolina, South Carolina on Wednesday to survey damage from Helene; Harris heading to Georgia

President Joe Biden will travel to North Carolina and South Carolina on Wednesday to survey the damage from Hurricane Helene. A White House official said that Vice President Kamala Harris is heading to Georgia on Wednesday and will visit North Carolina "in the coming days."

3. Interstate 40 East, cut off for days, reopens to evacuate Asheville area, officials say

A new lifeline to evacuate people from western North Carolina is back open. As of Tuesday morning, Interstate 40 East is open again after being cut off by flooding, downed trees and mudslides for four days.

4. Jimmy Carter, nation’s oldest former president, turns 100

Jimmy Carter, the oldest living and longest-lived U.S. president, added another milestone on Tuesday. The philanthropist, humanitarian and the 39th President of the United States became the first former president to celebrate his 100th birthday.

A K&W Cafeteria general manager said he ushered guests and employees alike into the restrooms with winds whipping around the restaurant when a tornado ripped through Rocky Mount. “That's when we heard that loud, roaring sound,” Clarence Furse said. Furse said when he felt safe enough, he walked right out of the back of the restaurant to check on his car in the parking lot. When he noticed employees from the Hing Ta Restaurant looking dazed and confused in the pouring rain, that's when he spoke up. “I was directing to tell them, ‘Look, come over here.' We have shelter over here. The building is fine,” Furse said.
