Four additional grease traps in Monroe County were found to have deficiencies relating to grease trap covers. The news comes following inspections on 2,500 traps.
County officials ordered the inspections following the death of 3-year-old Bryce Raynor, who he fell into a grease trap at the University Avenue Tim Hortons.
The four traps with issues have since been fixed, according to the county.
County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo said it was discovered that no agency or entity at the state or local level was responsible for inspecting grease traps in New York State, so she took action.
“I believe everyone was surprised to discover that no agency or entity, at the state or local level, is responsible for the inspection of grease traps in New York State. That’s why Monroe County led from the front to perform these safety sweeps,” she said in a statement.
Dinolfo also introduced “Bryce's Law,” which would require grease traps to withstand heavy loads and be secured with either a bolt or lock. It will also require them to be checked by the Department of Health annually.
A public hearing on Bryce’s Law will be held September 10 at 6:45 p.m. in the Monroe County Legislature Chambers.
