The tragic death of a 3-year-old boy at a Rochester Tim Hortons last Monday has the county taking action to secure grease traps. Monroe County officials started inspecting traps Thursday in an effort to prevent another tragedy.
One Tim Hortons location has two grease traps outside the restaurant. They’re below ground tanks that are sealed by cast iron plates in the drive-thru.
Inspectors said they took a look Thursday and found both to be in good condition.
The Health Department is now in the process of checking out some 2,500 grease traps throughout Monroe County.
The first priority: make sure the covers that protect those traps are secure by being fastened or bolted.
Mike Garland, the director of environmental services for Rochester and of Monroe County, is part of a 25-inspector team. He said that the Department of Transportation and Public Safety also are assisting in the operation, with a goal of pinpointing each location of the traps whether inside or outside, while also informing establishment owners of a bill that enforces a grease trap to be secure.
Thousands of locations that will be checked out over the next week or so to make sure the covers are secure.
