1. Online classes, potable water and more: How UNCA is pushing forward after Helene

Students will return to campus housing starting Wednesday, sporting events are also expected to continue in the near future and, soon, the university will have potable water.

2. Thousands of bees dead following post-storm aerial pesticide spray in Brunswick County

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture is currently investigating this bee death event and says that so far, eight beekeepers have reached out to report dead and dying bees after the county’s aerial spray event. The Department of Agriculture says, to be clear, they’re not investigating if the spraying was necessary, but if it was done correctly. 

3. 72-year-old 'AK Guru' charged with making and selling machine guns in N.C.

Earl Carter, 72 of Hamlet, North Carolina, is accused of making and selling machine guns. The defendant told authorities that Carter possessed "hundreds" of machine guns during the time the two knew each other, calling the amount "astronomical," court documents allege.

4. U.S. economy grew at solid 2.8% pace last quarter on strength of consumer spending

The gross domestic product — the economy's total output of goods and services — slowed slightly from its 3% growth rate in the April-June quarter. The U.S. economy has continued to expand in the face of the much higher borrowing rates the Federal Reserve imposed in 2022 and 2023 in its drive to curb inflation.
