A 72-year-old felon in Hamlet, North Carolina, is accused of making and selling machine guns.
Earl Carter, known as the "AK Guru," is facing federal charges of conspiracy to manufacture and sell firearms without a license, possession of a machine gun - aid and abet, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
An undercover FBI agent bought four machine guns and illegal suppressors from Carter in Wake County, federal court documents allege. A cooperating defendant, who was not named, was also arrested in the case. Officials said Carter sold guns to the person and taught them how to make machine guns.
The defendant told authorities that Carter possessed "hundreds" of machine guns during the time the two knew each other, calling the amount "astronomical," court documents allege.
On Oct. 18, authorities issued a federal warrant and searched Carter's property on Grace Chapel Road, including his home, workshop and other outbuildings.
"During the search, investigators seized multiple firearms with components present appearing to make the firearm capable of functioning as a machine gun," court documents state. A suppressor was also found.
As a felon, carter was not allowed to possess firearms. His criminal history includes discharging a weapon into an occupied home in February 1994.
Carter has been making guns for a "significant portion" of his life, according to court documents.
Authorities said Carter knowingly conspired to make and deal guns without a license.
