Today will be even hotter than Monday, with more areas likely making it into the low 100s for an afternoon high temperature. With the very high humidity, the heat index may range between 100 and 115 degrees through the afternoon. The National Weather Service has placed central North Carolina under an Extreme Heat Warning for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Storms will be possible Wednesday. A low (level 1) threat for severe storms will be in place. Damaging winds, hail and locally heavy rain will be the primary concerns.

1. Duke asks customers to conserve power as region bakes in heat wave
Duke Energy is urging customers in the Carolinas to reduce electricity use at peak hours as temperatures are expected to reach near-record highs. The utility said Monday that it wants to avert outages by reducing power demand between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Much of the state is expected to see dangerously hot conditions with high temperatures and humidity through Wednesday.
2. N.C. Treasury Department says AI can help return unclaimed property to its owners
The Department of the State Treasurer said artificial intelligence can help identify unclaimed property possibly worth millions of dollars and get it back to its owners. The agency said Monday that it completed a pilot program with OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, to find ways to improve services.
3. Habitat Charlotte celebrating first ‘by-right’ duplex for homeowners
A new affordable housing chapter is being written in west Charlotte. Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region just completed its first "by-right" duplex, which allows two affordable home options on a single parcel without going through rezoning. A Habitat leader said rezoning can be a costly and lengthy process, which can create barriers for homeownership. A change in a Charlotte ordinance that took effect in 2023 allows more flexible housing types in neighborhoods typically zoned for single family.
