We’re wrapping up the day for you with the most important stories you need to know and your weather outlook.

Your Weather Planner

We saw quite the active weather day with showers and storms developing and making their way through eastern North Carolina. Some storms dropped a lot of rain.

As we go through the night, any shower and storm chances will end and we'll see mostly cloudy skies. The sun makes a comeback Thursday, but with a frontal system lingering near the area, we'll keep the chance for scattered showers and storms.

For the Fourth of July, we are expecting pretty average weather — partly cloudy skies, near normal temperatures and a small afternoon and evening shower and storm chance.

Today's Big Stories

1. Tropical development possible near the Southeast U.S. this weekend

A weakening frontal boundary over the Southeast U.S. later this week into the weekend will become the focus for some potential tropical development. An area of low pressure could form near the Gulf or Atlantic coast with conditions marginally favorable for development. Later this weekend or early next week, a tropical or subtropical depression could form. Regardless of development, heavy rainfall is expected across the Southeast.

2. Haitian immigrants brace for the end of protected status

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced Friday that she’s terminating temporary protected status for Haitians. TPS is for immigrants whose home countries are experiencing a natural disaster or ongoing conflict. “The environmental situation in Haiti has improved enough that it is safe for Haitian citizens to return home,” the agency said.

3. FAA investigating after plane part found in Raleigh driveway

Raleigh police say they were called after a piece of an airplane was found blocking a driveway. The FAA said a wing flap from a Delta Air Lines flight landing at Raleigh-Durham International Airport fell off during a flight the same morning. Investigators are working to figure out if the plane piece is what wound up in the driveway.

4. Sean 'Diddy' Combs acquitted of most serious charges, convicted of a prostitution-related offense

Sean “Diddy" Combs was convicted of prostitution-related offenses but acquitted Wednesday of sex trafficking and racketeering charges that could have put one of hip-hop’s most celebrated figures behind bars for life. The mixed result came on the third day of deliberations. It could still send Combs, 55, to prison for as long as a decade.

5. Tying it Together: Sen. Thom Tillis says he won't seek reelection, what's next

Tim Boyum talks with Lucille Sherman of Axios Raleigh and WUNC Capitol Bureau Chief Colin Campbell about U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis dropping out of the U.S. Senate race and the wild “ending” to the legislative session this week.
