Today's Big Stories

1. N.C. House kills shrimp trawling bill

A bill banning shrimp trawling within a half mile of the North Carolina coast will not be moving forward in the General Assembly. House Rep. Keith Kidwell came out of a caucus Wednesday afternoon and said, “the bill is essentially dead.” The bill would have banned shrimp trawling within a half mile of the coast and inland.

2. N.C. lawmakers advance bill targeting manufacturers for PFAS contamination in drinking water

A proposal to regulate "forever chemicals" has advanced in the North Carolina General Assembly and for the first time has bipartisan support. Last month, the state House voted 104-3 to pass the PFAS Pollution and Polluter Liability Act. The measure would require manufacturers who have contributed to PFAS contamination in the state’s water system to pay the costs to remove it.

3. N.C. Medicaid pilot gets $30M approved by state Senate; bill now goes to House

A North Carolina pilot program focused on creating a better quality of life for Medicaid recipients could receive the funding it needs to continue. This program is called the Healthy Opportunities Pilot. State senators approved $30 million in stopgap funding for the program, as part of a greater bill for a continuation of funds for many measures, to keep it operational. The state House must now take up the bill.

4. Man, two teens found dead inside burning home, Wake Co. sheriff says

The bodies of a 49-year-old man and a 13-year-old and a 15-year-old were found Tuesday morning at a home in the Garner area, according to a news release. Two cats were also found dead.

5. Trump insists Iran nuclear site 'obliterated' after leaked report indicating otherwise

President Donald Trump on Wednesday held firm on his stance that U.S. strikes over the weekend “obliterated” an Iranian nuclear site in the wake of a leaked report from the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency indicating less damage. The president also said that he does not believe Iran was able to move nuclear materials prior to the attacks to save it and asserted Tehran is done engaging in nuclear activities.
