Very warm turns to hot as we move through the day Wednesday. Expect highs in the upper 80s to mid-90s by the afternoon with a heat index in the low 100s. An isolated shower or storm may develop after 1 p.m. Locally heavy rain cannot be ruled out. Rip current risk will be elevated.
A cold front moves into the state late Thursday, bringing a more likely scattered storm threat through the evening. Damaging winds, hail and flash flooding will be possible.

1. Work continues to preserve historic art deco hotel in Edenton
After more than a decade of debate and delays, Edenton’s historic Hotel Hinton project is finally getting off the ground. A team at Down East Preservation is taking the lead to restore the vacant 100-year-old building. Once work is complete, the company plans to reopen the hotel with 60 rooms.
2. Summer can be deadliest time for teen drivers, data shows
Dan Wagner has dedicated his life to trying to keep teen drivers safe. He created the Teen Driving Solutions School, a two-day event designed to instruct teens on how to make informed, safe decisions behind the wheel.
3. Trump says U.S. knows where Iran's Khamenei is hiding and urges Iran's unconditional surrender
President Donald Trump's increasingly muscular comments toward the Iranian government come after he urged Tehran's 9.5 million residents to flee as he cut short his visit to an international summit to return to Washington for talks with his national security team. Israel, with five days of missile strikes, has done considerable damage to Iran and believes it can deal a permanent blow to Tehran's nuclear program — particularly if it gets more help from the Republican president.
4. Americans turn cautious and retail sales slide after spring spending surge to beat tariffs
Retail sales fell sharply in May as consumers pulled back after a sharp increase in spending in March to get ahead of President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs. The sales drop comes after sharp declines in consumer confidence this year. Still, inflation has cooled and unemployment remains low, which could fuel steady spending in coming months.

It’s been 10 years since the Mother Emanuel AME Church shooting in Charleston. With a victim’s brother, Spectrum News 1’s Tim Boyum returned to the South Carolina city to visit the church. Although much is different, the pain remains.
