The National Weather Service has extended Flash Flood Watches for parts of eastern North Carolina.
Tuesday will be another very warm and humid day. Afternoon highs will climb from the mid-80s to low 90s. With dew points in the low 80s, the humidity will make it feel like the mid- to upper 90s.
Storms will be possible again Tuesday, primarily after 1 p.m. Locally heavy rain will be possible with any storm and may lead to areas of flash flooding.

1. 5-year-old wild stallion hit, killed by car on Outer Banks
A stallion named Alexander was killed by a car Saturday night on the North Carolina Outer Banks, according to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, and the driver is facing a DWI charge. The nonprofit said Alexander was the last of his mother’s offspring and part of the critically endangered wild horse population. The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
2. N.C. redistricting trial begins, with racial gerrymandering allegations the focus
A three-judge panel convened Monday in Winston-Salem for a trial over allegations that GOP legislative leaders violated federal law and the U.S. Constitution when they enacted electoral maps in North Carolina in October 2023. Republican leaders say that lawfully partisan — and not racial — considerations informed their decision-making.
3. Firefighter killed in training accident in Montreat area
Violet Caramella, a firefighter for the Riceville Volunteer Fire Department, was involved in the accident around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Buncombe County officials said. Caramella succumbed to her injuries despite lifesaving efforts from fellow firefighters and emergency personnel. Two other members of the Riceville department were injured and are expected to recover, officials said.
4. Google launches new AI-powered weather model to predict hurricanes
Google’s new AI-powered tropical cyclone model is the latest addition to its WeatherNext model family, a suite of AI weather models from Google DeepMind and Google Research. According to Google, “this model can predict a cyclone’s formation, track, intensity, size and shape — generating 50 possible scenarios, up to 15 days ahead.”
5. Man suspected of shooting 2 Minnesota lawmakers caught, AP sources say
Vance Boelter was arrested Sunday evening. The arrest was confirmed to The Associated Press by law enforcement officials who were not authorized to publicly discuss details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity. Former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were killed early Saturday in their home in the Minneapolis suburbs. Sen. John Hoffman, also a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette, were injured at their Champlin home, about 9 miles away.

Day of Care works to help those without a place to call home
Vendors were out in downtown Raleigh for the Project REACH OUT: Day of Care. Twice a year, the Downtown Raleigh Alliance hosts the event, which is a chance for providers and nonprofits to gather to offer services such as dental care, a haircut and a clean set of clothes to those experiencing homelessness.
