Showers will gradually dissipate overnight after producing heavy rainfall Thursday. There was some localized flash flooding. The area of low pressure responsible for the downpours and strong thunderstorms will move out of the area on Friday.
Low clouds and fog may reduce visibility overnight into early Friday morning. Temperatures will drop to the middle and upper 60s by sunrise.
Friday will be mostly dry with sunshine in the afternoon following a cloudy morning. Temperatures will peak in the upper 80s to lower 90s. There's a slight chance for an isolated storm by evening, especially in areas west of U.S. 1.
Expect higher chances for afternoon and evening storms this weekend. Fueled by fairly hot afternoon temperatures, some of the weekend storms could be strong with damaging wind gusts and hail.

1. 180 jobs will be lost as Alpek announces closure of Fayetteville plant
Alpek said it will cease operations at its DAK Americas Cedar Creek facility by July 31. The Mexico-based company said the closure will allow it to save about $20 million annually starting in 2026. The plant makes plastic products.
2. Bail revoked for suspect, 2 more sought in mass shooting at Catawba Co. house party
As the search continues for two suspects in a deadly mass shooting at a Catawba County house party, one man charged in the outburst of violence remains in jail after a judge revoked his bond in an earlier case. Garon Nathaniel Killian, 20, of Lenoir, is one of four suspects held so far in the Sunday shooting near Hickory.
3. Student-led challenge helping to fight food insecurity on N.C. campus
Davidson-Davie Community College is using its winnings in a statewide challenge to boost efforts to ensure students don’t go hungry. The school recently was named a Sector Hunger Champion for Community College Campuses in the N.C. Collegiate Hunger Challenge.
