Today's Big Stories

1. 'It is a big need': N.C. needs almost 1,000 doctors for geriatric patients, medical group says

The UNC Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program is helping prepare geriatricians as the state’s older adult population, age 65 and up, is expected to double to about 2.7 million in 2040. “The truth is that we won’t have enough geriatricians just based on the kind of that growing population of… North Carolina,” said Emily Cetrone, associate program director for the program. “It is a big need just across the entire country.”

2. Children no longer at Asheville Academy treatment center after 2 suicides in 1 month raise concerns

Another North Carolina residential treatment facility has come under fire after two young girls died by suicide in the same month there, according to authorities. It happened at Asheville Academy, a treatment facility in Weaverville with ties to Trails Carolina — both Oregon-based wilderness therapy programs operating in North Carolina. Trails was closed after the death of a 12-year-old boy in the camp's care.

3. 1 dead, 11 others injured in North Carolina weekend shooting

At least 80 shots were fired in a western North Carolina neighborhood early Sunday, killing one person and injuring 11 others in a residential area where a house party was being held, authorities said. No arrests have been made, but authorities believe there was more than one shooter when the gunfire erupted about 12:45 a.m. Sunday, the Catawba County Sheriff's Office said.

4. Mentoring group prepares women to complete first triathlon

Women of different backgrounds and abilities are taking part in a North Carolina training program that aims to help them complete their first triathlon. Tri It for Life, a mentoring organization with chapters across the Carolinas, prepares participants to cross the finish line after 12 weeks of training.

5. Where to expect tropical activity in June

The Atlantic hurricane season officially began Sunday. Even though systems can form before hurricane season, June is still early in the season and tropical systems typically struggle to develop. The most favorable areas for tropical development in June are the Gulf, the northern Caribbean Sea and the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, just off the southeastern coast.
