1. Rural communities in need of affordable housing options
Scott Farmer, executive director at the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, says affordable housing doesn't have to mean cheap housing. He says low-income apartment complexes can be assets to rural areas across the state.

A Bed and A Book delivers a new bed, mattress, bedding, pillow and books to children in need. The organization started in Forsyth County, expanded to Greensboro and High Point and will launch in Watauga County in April.

Veterans who served at the Marine Corps base from the 1950s to the '80s may be entitled to compensation for health problems caused by contaminated water. Scammers are sending texts and emails to veterans, claiming a fast payout after an upfront payment, the Better Business Bureau warns.
