Scattered storms today will be followed by a mostly calm and quiet weather forecast for the weekend. Under partly cloudy to mostly clear skies, temperatures will drop to the 40s and 50s for a brisk Saturday morning.

Temperatures will peak in the lower to middle 70s in the afternoon under partly to mostly cloudy skies. Most of the area will stay dry, but there's a slight chance for rain in the Sandhills late in the day.

Showers will begin to return to the area Sunday, and rain chances are looking more likely.

1. N.C. lawmakers focus on guns, immigration parental rights before key deadline

Republican state legislators worked to keep their high-priority bills alive ahead of the biennial “crossover deadline,” while many other pieces of legislation are likely dead for two years.

2. Feds say Western Carolina University breaking Trump order on transgender students

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights said the university is violating Title IX, which prohibits discrimination based on sex. The department accused the school of not following the Trump administration's executive order to not recognize transgender women.

3. UNC: Belichick's girlfriend 'welcome' at football facilities after report she had been banned

The university issued a statement after a podcaster cited two unnamed sources at UNC that said Jordon Hudson, the girlfriend of football coach Bill Belichick, was no longer allowed on the field or at the football facility. 

4. Leo XIV's brother recalls feeling of 'disbelief' over his sibling becoming pope

When white smoke poured out of the Sistine Chapel revealing that a new pope had been chosen, John Prevost turned on his television in Illinois, called his niece, and they watched in awe as his brother's name was announced.
