A Massachusetts college student will plead guilty to stealing millions of students' and teachers' private data from two U.S. education tech companies and extorting it for ransom, the U.S. attorney's office said.
Assumption University student Matthew Lane, 19, is accused of using stolen login credentials to access the computer network of a software and cloud storage company serving school systems in the U.S. and abroad, according to U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts Leah B. Foley.
PowerSchool was not named in the court filings, but North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson confirmed the connection.

1. Shootout, standoff ends after suspect shot by N.C. deputies

An hourslong standoff in Chatham County ended shortly after midnight when the suspect was shot by deputies, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said. The incident started around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on Lambert Chapel Road in Siler City. Deputies serving an involuntary commitment order said the man started shooting from inside his trailer, “with hundreds of rounds discharged.” 

2. North Carolina House advances more Hurricane Helene aid in $465M package

The North Carolina House has advanced another Hurricane Helene funding package to address pressing needs in the mountains eight months after the storm. The chamber approved a $465 million spending plan unanimously on Thursday. The bill now heading to the Senate includes a business grant program.

3. GPS app helps N.C. firefighters navigate during emergencies

Firefighters in Cornelius-Lemley, Matthews, Greensboro and Raleigh have been using the app, What3words, to navigate to the exact location of a person experiencing an emergency. The app divides the world into three-meter squares and assigns each location to three unique words. For example, the app identifies the address of Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue with the words, “eases.viewing.primrose.”
