The North Carolina General Assembly is in the midst of budget season, and one group of people fear they’re being left out. One North Carolina woman has become an outspoken figure in the fight to get people living with intellectual or developmental disabilities more help.
Wilmington native Cheryl Powell has dedicated her life to helping others. 
Now, she’s asking for help. She wants the North Carolina General Assembly to add more funding to the Innovations Waivers program, which pays for "direct support professionals" to help people living with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

1. Suspect wounded after trading fire with 2 troopers on I-85

Two North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers got into a shootout with a 25-year-old man, who was a passenger in a vehicle. The shooting happened Thursday afternoon along Interstate 85 in Guilford County, authorities said.

3. 19-year-old identified as suspect shot and killed at Durham police headquarters

A suspect in a homicide was shot and killed in the Durham Police Department headquarters Wednesday evening, officials said. Police said Joshua Farmer, 19, grabbed an officer's gun as investigators were finishing an interview and fired the fatal shot himself.

Max Selleck is a senior at Woods Charter School in Chapel Hill. He's the captain of the ultimate frisbee team and vice president of the Model UN Club. He was selected as a Spectrum High School Scholar. Selleck will receive a $1,000 scholarship that he will use when he attends UNC-Wilmington this fall.
