1. N.C. judges side with GOP lawmakers for who gets say on highway patrol commander

A state Superior Court panel Monday sided with Republican lawmakers in Gov. Josh Stein's challenge of a law that eroded his office's powers. The law last year shifted the power to appoint a commander of the State Highway Patrol away from the governor. Stein also is fighting provisions in the law that stripped his power to appoint State Board of Elections members and to fill a seat on the state Utilities Commission.

2. Former FBI assistant director weighs in on Catawba Co. mass shooting

As local, state and federal authorities continue to investigate the deadly mass shooting in Catawba County, the former assistant director of the FBI is weighing on what investigations into national gangs entail. Chris Swecker, a Charlotte attorney and former FBI assistant director, said gangs are “the biggest criminal enterprise problem" in the country. Catawba County investigators have not yet named the gang involved in the June 1 mass shooting.

3. N.C. redistricting trial begins, with racial gerrymandering allegations the focus

A three-judge panel convened Monday in Winston-Salem for a trial over allegations that GOP legislative leaders violated federal law and the U.S. Constitution when they enacted electoral maps in North Carolina in October 2023. Republican leaders say that lawfully partisan — and not racial — considerations informed their decision-making.

Google has introduced a new, experimental artificial intelligence weather model for predicting hurricanes. The new AI-based tropical cyclone model will be another tool for meteorologists and weather enthusiasts alike to predict the track and intensity of future storms this hurricane season. According to Google, “this model can predict a cyclone’s formation, track, intensity, size and shape — generating 50 possible scenarios, up to 15 days ahead.”
