It sounds like a scene out of a movie. An armored car spilled bags of money. People flocked to the fallen cash and started grabbing it up. But now, $100,000 is missing, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is reporting it as felony larceny.
Just before 10 a.m. Friday, bags of cash fell off an armored truck outside a gas station on Sunset Road in north Charlotte, according to a police report. The armored truck belonged to GardaWorld, a security company.
Police said the door inside the truck malfunctioned before the money fell out. There was no accident or collision before the money spilled from the the truck, CMPD said.
There are "multiple suspects," police said, but they are not sure how many. Investigators ask anyone who picked up money to call the police department.
"The reporting person stated on 09/14/2023 at 0954 hours at 4500 block of Sunset Rd in the area of Hamilton Circle the suspects stole money that had fallen off a vehicle," police said in the brief incident report provided to Spectrum News 1.
