Officials are ordering residents in areas of Polk County to evacuate as three forest fires continue to burn Friday.

Polk County officials and other agencies are working to contain the fires.

"If you do not leave now, you could be trapped, injured or killed," Polk County officials said Friday.

Shelter is available at 75 Carmel Lane in Columbus.

Officials said terrain and high winds continue to challenge firefighters. Visibility was reduced and roads and evacuation routes may become blocked, Polk County officials said Friday.

The Fish Hook Fire, near Lake Adger, on Green River Cove Road started due to a downed power line, and was burning on more than 150 acres, according to the N.C. Forest Service. The fire was 50% contained as of Friday evening.

At least six buildings were burned down since it began, according to Polk County officials.

Authorities announced mandatory evacuations for the following locations:

  • Piney Gate area
  • Lake Adger from Jackson to Highland Lane
  • Parkway North Road from Lake Adger to North Park lane
  • North Park Lane
  • North Boundary Road
  • North Martin Lane 
  • Deep Woods Lane
  • Wesley Lane
  • Piney Overlook Lane
  • Piney Gate Road
  • Gamelands Trail
  • Oakview Lane
  • Volley Way
  • Charity Branch Drive
  • Windsong Lane
  • Moonshine Trace

Scarletts Mountain Road is under a voluntary evacuation, officials said.

The Deep Woods Fire on Piney Mountain Road was burning on more than 1,100 acres as of Friday evening, with 0% containment, according to the Forest Service. This fire has claimed one building, with another damaged, Polk County officials said.

The Black Cove fire, which started off Green River Cove Road, was at more than 1,080 acres with 0% containment as of Friday evening, according to the Forest Service. No homes or businesses have been lost from the wildfire, they added.

A total of 70 firefighters from multiple agencies, including the Forest Service, were working to contain the fire Thursday.
