WINSTON, SALEM, N.C. — A driver fired a gun at officers multiple times during a police pursuit in Winston-Salem early Monday morning, deputies say.

The situation unfolded just before 2:15 a.m. when a deputy attempted to stop a Toyota Tacoma exiting onto U.S. 421 SB from Lewisville-Clemmons Road. Forsyth County deputies say the driver of the Toyota refused to stop, leading to a pursuit where the driver "shot multiple times at patrol vehicles."

Officers with the Winston-Salem Police Department and the North Carolina Highway Patrol responded to assist. The Toyota eventually crashed on U.S. 421 NB around 2:20 a.m.

"The driver continued to actively shoot at Deputies, resulting in an officer-involved-shooting," deputies said. A deputy and the driver of the Toyota were treated by EMS. Details regarding possible injuries were not released.

The three deputies involved in the shooting are being placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

The SBI will independently investigate the shooting.

No names in the case have been released.
