CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says it has made a second arrest in the December 2019 killing of NoDa sandwich shop owner Scott Brooks.

On Tuesday, the department announced the arrest of 31-year-old Steven Staples. Police say Staples is charged with murder, first-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

CMPD held a news conference Tuesday afternoon at headquarters. You can watch that entire video below.

Detectives say this is the fifth homicide Staples has been charged in connection to over the past one and a half months. 

The other killings took place in December and January, according to a timeline released during the news conference, after Brooks' death. 

In March, police arrested 33-year-old Terry Connor Jr. on multiple charges that include murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, first-degree kidnapping, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

CMPD says Connor was found "hiding in plain sight" on Countryside Drive in northeast Charlotte. He is also charged in connection to two other homicides involving Staples.

Brooks was shot and killed outside Brooks' Sandwich House while opening on December 9, 2019. He owned the popular eating establishment with his twin brother David.

This is an ongoing investigation, but homicide detectives with CMPD say they do not believe there are any additional outstanding suspects at this time in regards to the death of Brooks.
