NORTH CAROLINA -- The rain has stopped, but the mountain counties continue seeing damage from last week’s strong storms.
- People are still recovering after storms caused landslides
- Two people died following a landslide in Boone
- A landslide on Highway 9 will reroute traffic for several days
A landslide on Highway 9 in Bat Cave happened on early Tuesday morning. The Broad River fire chief estimates the slide goes around 200 feet up the mountain and is 200 feet wide.
Another landslide last week in Boone killed two people after it created a gas leak. The homeowners tried to ventilate their home and a back-up water heater turned on causing an explosion.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation says grounds are still wet, so it is essential you watch your surroundings.
"The ground is still saturated and if we get some heavy rain we could be back in the situation again where we could have some slides with the soil being saturated," Watauga County maintenance engineer Kevin Whittington said.
Highway 9 in Bat Cave is expected to be closed for at least seven to 10 days.
