Democrat Jeff Jackson is projected to win the race for North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District, according to the Associated Press.

Jackson was well ahead of Republican Pat Harrigan with more than 58% of the vote, as of 9:30 p.m.

Charlotte Democratic Rep. Alma Adams is the projected winner in the 12th Congressional District, according to the Associated Press. She has been in the House since winning a special election in 2014.

Jackson has served four terms in the North Carolina Senate, representing part of Charlotte and southeast Mecklenburg County. He originally considered a bid for Senate before the Democratic Party got behind Cheri Beasley.

Harrigan, a business owner and Afghan war veteran, is considered a newcomer to politics.

Redistricting changed the shape of the Charlotte-area congressional districts. Adams’ district is northern Mecklenburg County. The new 14th District encompasses Charlotte, southern Mecklenburg and eastern Gaston County, including Gastonia.

North Carolina added a 14th seat in the U.S. House of Representatives this year thanks to population growth recorded in the 2020 census.

“Tonight’s victory is in a new district — offering an opportunity for a new start and a new set of expectations,” Jackson said in a statement Tuesday night. “It’s the honor of a lifetime to be chosen to serve the people of North Carolina’s 14th District in Congress, and I'm looking forward to using this office to do important things for the people who live here."

“If I do this job well, not only will we be checking things off the to-do list around our district — but I'll raise your expectations for those who hold elected office. That’s the leadership North Carolina families deserve,” he said.

Every member of the United States House of Representatives was up for election in the midterms. The balance of power in Congress was on the ballot, with Republicans hoping to get a majority in both the House and Senate.

Many expected a “red wave” in the midterm elections. By Wednesday morning, the country should know which party will control the House and Senate for the final two years of President Joe Biden’s term.
