VICTOR, N.Y. — A no-kill feline rescue in Victor is celebrating a major expansion of its cat sanctuary.

Pet Pride is a non-profit that’s been saving cats since 1977. A $1.2 million expansion project has doubled its sanctuary and adoption space.

Spectrum News 1 Rochester took a tour of the newly expanded shelter and met "Olive," a stray cat who had seven kittens. She is now being cared for by Pet Pride Cat Sanctuary and Adoption Center in Victor.

“She is such a good mom, she goes around and watches all her babies,” said Kari Labounty, shelter operations manager at Pet Pride.

Olive is a lucky kitty in a world full of stray and abandoned cats. Pet Pride is trying to keep up with the need so just doubled in size thanks to its generous donors who truly believe that every cat deserves a loving home. 

“The need for this community to help these abandoned and stray animals is just so large,” Labounty said. “Our waitlist was 50 cats.”

“We have two cat apartments here. We have Whiskers Lodge and Catnip Cabana,” said Marlies Sullivan, director of fundraising at Pet Pride.

The kitty apartments provide a quiet space for cats to relax alone or together. All the cats can roam free. Pet Pride believes it makes the cats happy and less stressed that also helps speed up adoptions.

All of the cat enclosures at Pet Pride were custom-made with plenty of room. For the first time ever, Pet Pride has on-site veterinarian care.

“The spay and neuter at the clinic is ideal since we’re traveling around to four different vets,” Labounty said. “We need to double the amount of cats we save just to try to make a difference in this community.”

Last year Pet Pride found new homes for 570 cats and kittens. The cats stay at Pet Pride as long as it takes to find forever homes.

Pet Pride has meet-and-greet opportunities for families interested in adopting. The cat sanctuary is located at 7731 Victor Mendon Road in Victor. It's open seven days a week.
