In Colonie, candidates for town supervisor tackled some tough questions a week away from Election Day.

Republican George Scaringe is running to unseat Democrat Paula Mahan, and both candidates talked about how they'd work to improve traffic congestion and control development.

Both said residents deal with pass-through traffic and pointed to the new Exit 3 on the Northway as one way to begin addressing the problem.

Things got a bit heated when the debate turned to the topic of pensions. Scaringe criticized Mahan collecting a pension in conjunction to her town supervisor salary, and Mahan countered by referring to a past audit done on Scaringe's surrounding work hours.

"Leadership starts at the top, and I think you should tighten your belt and work with the amount that is given to you,” Scaringe said.

"I think my opponent’s been collecting a pension that he shouldn’t have since 2004, and if he pays all that back, then I’ll have more to think about,” Mahan countered.

Ahead of the debate, voters also had a chance to get to know more about the six candidates running for town board seats.
