Jeremy Ruckert knew exactly what he was getting into when he chose to go to Ohio State.
The high school wide receiver was converting to tight end and joining an offense absolutely loaded with pass catchers.
"If you play tight end at Ohio State, you're doing every single job and you're making an impact in every single way," Ruckert said at the NFL Combine in early March. "I knew that going into Ohio State that maybe the production might not be there, but what I'm going to get out of that program... the person I've become, the player I've become. The versatility I've been able to adapt to. I don't regret that at all. I wanted to play in a really competitive environment. Great competition every week. Winning championships. I wouldn't trade that for the world. I think that's what got me here and I'm proud of that."
Ruckert displayed that attitude over four seasons with the Buckeyes. In 44 career games, the tight end caught just 64 passes for 615 receiving yards. However, Ruckert made the most of his targets, catching 12 touchdowns.
Those stats might not pop like many would hope, but Ruckert shies away from concentrating on those.
"I don't get caught up in the numbers a lot," Ruckert said. "It's easy to get frustrated and that stuff and that's what makes you play worse. So I think the biggest thing for me is trying to keep a clear head, keep training and working to be the most complete guy I can be so when that opportunity comes, whenever that is, make that play. I've always tried in big moments to rely on what you trained to do. What I've been doing my whole life. If that role's increased, it's increased. I'm going to do what I have to do and I'm excited for that. I'm just excited to show who I am and what I'm capable of."
He has good size for the position at 6'5" and 250 lbs.
Unfortunately Ruckert suffered a Lisfranc injury at the Senior Bowl that prevented him from doing any testing or drill work at the Combine or Ohio State's Pro Day beyond just the bench press, where he recorded 19 reps (tied for 5th most by TE at the Combine).
Still, he did make his mark on Bills Mafia with comments he said in Indianapolis.
"Some of my friends back home are Bills fans," Ruckert said. "I'm from Long Island, so a little bit south of that. Pretty good trip away, but it's the only team in New York so a lot of people back home have a sense of pride in that. Watching Josh Allen, he's special. He plays quarterback like a tight end and it's pretty cool to watch that. Like I said, being from New York you see a lot of that."
Ruckert's inability to run at all during the pre-draft process leaves the speed questions on the table. Pair that with the lower volume of production and I'd say he is looking like a later Day 2 to earlier Day 3 selection.
