It's not often two players from the same position on the same team could get picked in the 1st round of the same draft.
Washington cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Kyler Gordon are trying to do that this week.
McDuffie the more decorated of the two, earning 1st team All-PAC 12 and 3rd team All-American honors this past season despite not grabbing a single interception.
The corner believes his success has come from an evolving dedication to the game over his three years as a starter.
"I think it comes back to just preparation," McDuffie said at the NFL Combine in early March. "I spend a lot of time and a lot of energy in learning the plays, developing my skills, honing in my techniques and I always say I'm dedicated to what I do. I think a big part of that is the want to learn all these positions. The want to go out and do something different. To be versatile. To want to play all these different positions. And I think just mentally that's helped me so much in preparing me to play all these positions."
McDuffie has the ability to play outside and in. His size may dictate that more at the NFL level, standing 5'11" with 29 3/4" arms.
He does have solid athleticism, including a 4.44 second 40 yard dash time at the Combine.
McDuffie also believes his film study is ahead of the game as well.
"First off, you like to look at where they're going to line up on the field," McDuffie said. "I'm a big situation-football guy. What I'm going to get on mixed downs, 3rd downs, 3rd and short, 3rd and long. A lot of that will help you determine what the receivers going to do. What kind of routes they like to throw. It also comes down to the timing of the quarterback and receiver. A big part of DB is disrupting that timing and being physical when you need to be physical and understanding when they're going to take it vertical. Just knowing all that throughout the film watching has helped me a lot."
McDuffie is expected to be a mid-to-late 1st round pick.
