Most cities in North Carolina set a new record high on Thursday as temperatures soared into the 90s across the state. The Raleigh-Durham Airport hit 100 for the first time in 2019. It was the latest in the year that we have hit 100 and recorded the hottest day of year. Thursday was also the hottest day on record for the month of October in the Triangle. Weather records for the Raleigh area date back to 1887.
The historic heat wave that has been setting records not only in North Carolina but also across much of the southeastern United States is finally showing signs of breaking down. A cold front will move through the Carolinas late Friday bringing more comfortable temperatures for the weekend.
Friday will still be a hot day though with high temperatures ranging from the low 90s around the Triangle to the mid 90s in the Sandhills.
The cold front passing through the region should produce very little rain. However, there is a small chance for an isolated shower or thunderstorm in the evening across the Sandhills.
Cooler air will spill into the state Friday night allowing low temperatures to drop to the upper 50s and low 60s for early Saturday morning.
Saturday and Sunday will be bring partly sunny weather. Saturday highs will top out in just the low to mid 70s. Sunday's temperatures should reach near 80 and the low 80s. There is just a small chance for early morning drizzle Sunday.
The outlook into next week remains mostly dry. A second cold front will bring a small chance for showers late Monday into Tuesday. If we are lucky enough to see rain, it would be less than a tenth of an inch.
Next week should be much cooler than this week. After highs in the low 80s Monday, highs in the 70s are forecast for the rest of the week.
