CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have charged a driver involved in the deadly early morning crash Wednesday on I-85 that took the life of a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer.

On Thursday, the department announced several charges for 51-year-old Daniel Morgan. According to CMPD, Morgan failed to move into the single open lane of travel and reduce speed, which resulted in him crashing his tractor-trailer into four police vehicles, another semi-truck and Officer Mia Goodwin.

Morgan now faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, misdemeanor death by vehicle, failure to reduce speed and felony failure to move over for stopped emergency vehicle.

The wreck happened around 3:40 a.m. on I-85 south near W.T. Harris Boulevard while officers were assisting the North Carolina State Highway Patrol with an earlier incident.

CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings said Goodwin was pronounced dead on the scene.

"It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of CMPD Officer Mia Goodwin. Officer Goodwin proudly served the University City Division," Jennings said in a tweet Wednesday. " Rest easy hero, we have watch from here."

Three other officers were injured in the crash, Jennings said. They were taken to the hospital and have since been released, he said.

Goodwin, 33, was a mother of three and had just returned from maternity leave, Jennings said. She is survived by her husband, Charlotte firefighter Brenton Goodwin, and three children, ages 3, 1 and 4 months.

"This profession is one that’s not for everyone, but I do know that she knew it was for her, and she wanted to continue and make this a career," the police chief said during a news conference Wednesday.

"We put on this uniform and we know that there’s no guarantees that we’re coming home to our families, and that is the most difficult part," he said.

"I am always grateful and humbled by the dedication andcommitmentt of our CMPD officers and Charlotte firefighters, and I know they are all hurting as we mourn for Officer Goodwin," City Manager Marcus Jones said in a statement. "Families go to sleep every night across Charlotte knowing they'll be safe because of the courage, pride and dedication of our CMPD officers."

Back the Blue NC organized a GoFundMe Wednesday to help Goodwin's family.

Around midnight the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a tractor trailer overturned on I-85 south at Exit 45, spilling around 24,000 pounds of cattle corn feed. Officials said the area was restricted to one left lane, which prompted assistance from several CMPD officers including Goodwin, while crews worked to clean the area.

The ground corn feed mixture had reportedly left a "wax like consistency" on the roadway that authorities said was unsafe for drivers.

Funeral arrangements

Goodwin's funeral arrangements are set for Wednesday. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police says they will honor Goodwin's life with a processional at 9 a.m. to First Baptist Charlotte. There will be a visitation from 10 a.m. to noon, with a service immediately after.

Police say the processional may impact commuters. CATS CityLYNX Gold Line will resume services at noon Wednesday to accommodate the processional.
