RALEIGH, N.C. — Some Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) students in our state are getting a financial boost thanks to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).

What You Need To Know

  • Some HBCU students in North Carolina received scholarships from NCDOT

  • The scholarships are $2,500

  • More than $50,000 in funds have been given out

  • Recipients are planning on working in the transportation area

More than $50,000 in scholarships has been given to 19 students in North Carolina who have an interest in transportation-related careers.

One scholarship recipient we spoke with at  Shaw University, Comfort Olorundare, says she hopes to create a program in her home country of Nigeria to help transport people to medical facilities.

"There are still people who find it hard to get to the hospital," Olorundare said. "People in the rural area find it hard to get to the clinic on time because of bad roads and bad traffic."

Olorundare hopes to go to medical school once she graduates from Shaw. “I figured transportation still relates to the medical field because all patients need to get to the clinic," she added.

Other scholarship recipients include students from North Carolina A&T, N.C. Central, Fayetteville State and UNC Pembroke.
