A powerful storm struck Gaston County on Wednesday afternoon, killing one, damaging trees and bringing down a utilty pole.

The National Weather Service had issued a Tornado Warning for parts of Gaston, Cleveland and Lincoln counties in the afternoon.

Severe weather was expected to continue through the evening in the region, and Charlotte-Douglas International Airport urged travelers to check flight status before heading to the airport.
