CHARLOTTE, N.C. — People from all over the Carolinas attended the funeral procession for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Joshua Eyer.
On Monday afternoon, Eyer and three other officers were shot and killed in the line of duty.
Hundreds filled the Uptown Charlotte streets Friday to pay their respect, including those who lost loved ones in the line of duty.
Trish Gotchev and her mother attended the funeral procession for Eyer.
Gotchev held a sign showing support for law enforcement.
"Everyone's hurt by these deaths," Gotchev said. "We want to support them just like people did for us six years ago."
Gotchev's brother Mike Doty served as a detective for the York County Sheriff's Office.
In January 2018, Doty and other York County officers responded to a call.
According to a statement from the York County Sheriff's Office, the suspect ambushed the officers with gunfire, killing Doty.
Gotchev says she will always remember and honor her brother for the amazing man he was.
"My little brother lived like a hero," Gotchev said. "He gave every day to not just his job, but friends and people he met on calls. He was an amazing man, and I'm proud that I'm his sister."
Gotchev says during this tragedy, her family felt the backing of the Charlotte area community.
"On the day of the funeral, when we drove from Charlotte down to Rock Hill to the cemetery, when we got off the highway, there were literally [people everywhere], people holding signs and supporting us. That love we felt from them meant so much to us that day," seh recalled.
Gotchev and her mother joined others in Charlotte to honor another fallen hero.
Gotchev says it's important for people to continue showing support to Eyer's loved ones and others in law enforcement.
"It was tough because I'm thinking of what it was like for us that day. It was rough. I'm also thinking about how it affects not just the family but officers from everywhere. It makes it tough for all of them," she said. "I'm praying for their protection, that we won't have to do another one of these any time soon. I know it seems like it keeps happening, but it would be my prayer that all of them are safe."
Doty's mother urges law enforcement to not be discouraged and continue the work they do for their communities.
