North Carolina airports are getting a $45 million piece of a $1 billion pie the federal government is doling out around the country, the White House said Thursday.

The money comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, passed by Congress in 2021.

“These are projects that are going to save Americans time and money,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said, according to The Associated Press.

In North Carolina, the funding will go to improvements at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Raleigh-Durham International Airport, Wilmington International Airport and the Avery County Airport.

Charlotte's airport will receive $27 million for "up to 16 passenger boarding bridges and associated ground power units and pre-conditioned air units," according to the White House.

At RDU, the federal government will send $12 million to expand the security checkpoint, baggage claim and federal inspection station at Terminal 2, the airport's main terminal.

In Wilmington, $4 million will go to expanding and realigning Terminal Access Road and the terminal curbfront.

“It's important to fund ILM’s 5-year capital program to ensure the airport keeps up with the record passenger growth we’re experiencing. We’re proud that the 5-year capital project is funded through federal and state aviation grants and that no loans or local tax dollars are utilized,” ILM Airport Director Jeff Bourk said.

At the Avery County Airport, in western North Carolina, the Department of Transportation said it will give the state $2 million for "the eligible portion of the construction of a new general aviation terminal building to meet existing and future demand."
