A man is dead after a police shooting in Cherryville, North Carolina, Sunday afternoon. 

Police say Thomas Michael Gregory Rivera, 35, fought with officers before he was shot at about 1 p.m. Sunday.

"The suspect assaulted one of the officers several times before grabbing a pipe. An Officer on scene fired a single shot," according to a news release from Cherryville police. 

Authorities said officers got a call about a "civil disturbance" on the 400 block of West 2nd Street, near Cherryville's small downtown district.

The officers found Rivera, and he started fighting with police, according to the release.

There was no mention of Rivera having a gun in the news release. Police did not say if the incident was recorded on body camera or dash camera video.

An ambulance took Rivera to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Cherryville is in Lincoln County, about 35 miles west of Charlotte.
