Responders rescued several people as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

Authorities confirmed Friday that two bodies were found at the fire site.

Nearby residents and workers say they're saddened to learn about the fire.

"I panicked," said south Charlotte resident Neal Harrington. "I saw the helicopters. It's very sad."

Although operations have resumed for many nearby South Park businesses, what happened on the construction site remains on their hearts.

Marshall See is employed at Tous les Jours, a bakery and cafe spot in south Charlotte. The business is in Piedmont Town Center, within walking distance of the South Park construction site.

See says the business had to evacuate Thursday, shortly after the fire broke out.

"We were open until noon," See said. "All of the firefighters started telling people in the area to evacuate this whole location. They wouldn't let customers come in just because of how unsafe it would be."

Although the bakery and cafe is back open for business, See says it's hard to imagine what some of his neighbors and families are going through.

"I just felt really bad this all happened," See said. "A lot of hearts go out to this whole area and this community. I know this doesn't happen a lot. We pray that nothing will ever happen again, a lot of empathy for everyone around."
