A bat infestation closed Ardrey Kell High School in Mecklenburg County this week.

About 20 bats were found in various locations inside the school, Principal Jamie Brooks said.

The school closed Monday, after students and staff returned from spring break, and will remain closed through Thursday, according to social media posts from school officials.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Animal Care & Control removed the bats and sent them safely to the N.C. Public Health Laboratory for rabies testing.

There is no reported human exposure from the bats, such as physical contact or bites, and no evidence of disease seen in the bats, the school says.

Janitorial staff cleaned spaces where bats were found in the school.

The school says there have been no reports of health issues, and no rooms were impacted by droppings, which can cause respiratory problems.

Bats can enter a building in a hole as small as a quarter inch, although no specific point has been identified.

"We ask that you advise your students, if they encounter the bats, to please not touch or disturb them," Brooks stated in an email.
