The Rowan County Sheriff's Office is not sharing much about what happened after a deputy shot and killed a man Tuesday in Rowan County, outside of Salisbury, North Carolina.
The sheriff's office confirmed the man shot and killed by deputies is Jordan Taylor Mays, 28, and that no law enforcement officers were injured, according to Rowan County Capt. Mark McDaniel. He said the shooting happened at about 5:30 p.m. at 138 Thriftwood Ct., near where the Yadkin River opens up into High Rock Lake.
McDaniel did not give any more details on the shooting and did not say if the State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident, which would be standard procedure when a deputy shoots someone.
Mays has received sentences on several criminal charges, according to the North Carolina Department of Corrections. Records show he was on probation for a 2021 conviction for larceny and a speeding-to-elude arrest conviction in 2020.
His record in the Corrections Department also shows convictions for DWI, drug possession and assaulting an officer or public employee.
McDaniel, with the Rowan County Sheriff's Office, said the sheriff may release more information Wednesday night or Thursday.
This is the seventh shooting involving a police officer or deputy in North Carolina so far in 2023. In most cases, police departments and sheriff's offices have released more details in the hours after a shooting, and publicly said they would have the SBI investigate what happened.
A spokeswoman for the SBI confirmed Wednesday they are investigating the Rowan County shooting.
