The first gunshot hit Officer Lauren Ehlke in the chest, the bullet lodged in her body camera. Video from a camera attached to another officer shows them pulling back, down the stairs from the bedroom door.
On Tuesday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department released body camera video from the Aug. 22 shooting. Police went to the house to serve Brenda Donahue with involuntary commitment papers.
The video shows police enter the house, and they are directed by a person who lives there upstairs where Donahue is in a bedroom with the door closed. As police line up behind the door, a gunshot goes off, hitting Ehlke's body camera. Police quickly retreat back down the stairs.
Donahue came out of the bedroom with the gun, according to Sgt. Steven Winterhalter, who gives analysis on the video released by the police department. He said Donahue looked over the railing and pointed her gun down at the officers.
Officer Brandon Graham shot at Donahue, missing the first time, but she fell over after the second shot.
Police on the scene gave CPR to Donahue until EMS arrived, CMPD said. Donahue was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, which is common practice with police shootings.
