DURHAM, N.C. — A man is in the hospital after being shot by police early Thursday morning in west Durham. A police officer also had minor injuries from the incident.

According to police, officers found a man sleeping in a stolen car in a motel parking lot about three miles away. When they went to wake him up, he drove off, hitting a police car and another vehicle as he left the scene.

Officers again found the man sleeping in his car, this time just before 5 a.m. in the lot of an apartment complex at 311 South Lasalle St., police said.

Authorities woke the man, who again started the car and tried to drive away, according to the Durham Police Department. The suspect drove over a curb, and the officers had to jump out of the way.

"Two officers, observing that another officer was in imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death, fired at the vehicle, striking the suspect in the left shoulder and left arm," police said in a news release.

The man ran from the car, but officers caught up with him, and he was arrested, according to police. One police officer had minor injuries from the foot chase. That officer was treated at the scene, police said.

Officers involved in the shooting have been put on administrative leave, the department said. The State Bureau of Investigation and Durham Police Department's internal affairs are investigating the shooting.
