CARY, N.C. — A baby was killed and three people were hurt when a fire tore through a North Carolina apartment complex Monday afternoon.

Fire crews were called out to the three-alarm blaze about 2:30 p.m. to the Aurella Apartments on Harlon Street and found heavy smoke billowing from the second and third floors. Some people were also trapped inside, according to Cary Fire Chief Michael Cooper.

Firefighters were able to rescue three people, and they were taken to a hospital. Another person was also injured, but they were able to be treated at the scene, Cooper said.

Crews remained on scene hitting hotspots, and the blaze is under control, Cooper said, but more than a dozen apartments were damaged in the fire. The American Red Cross is helping 34 people who are displaced by the fire, according to a news release from the organization.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this fire, as we continue to provide support to those who need us,” said Barry Porter, Regional CEO, American Red Cross Eastern North Carolina, in the release. “Although apartment and condo buildings are more likely to have sprinkler systems and fire alarms, it is still critical to have a fire escape plan and working smoke alarms in your unit.”

One of the residents impacted by the fire is staying at a motel and isn't sure when he'll be able to return. He lives on the first floor and said he had to throw a pot of water on flames that were blocking his front door.

No firefighters were hurt battling the blaze, and the fire's cause remains under investigation.
