RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. — A state trooper killed in a crash in Rutherford County this week was laid to rest Friday.
Trooper John Horton died Monday night while conducting a traffic stop near High Shoals Church Road. Horton had just pulled over a driver, Dusty Luke Beck, 26, when another responding trooper, Horton’s brother, lost control of his car and struck Horton’s patrol car.
Horton, a 15-year Highway Patrol veteran, and Beck were both killed. Horton leaves behind a wife and six children, according to Back the Blue N.C.

A procession of law enforcement vehicles departed around 11 a.m. Friday to escort Horton’s body from Harrelson Funeral Services in Forest City to Isothermal Community College for visitation and services.
Flags at ICC were lowered to half-staff in Horton's honor.
The nonprofit Back the Blue N.C. is working to raise money to help support Horton’s widow and children.
“We have to set up trust funds for six children and also take care of the wife,” Gadi Adelman, chairman and media relations for Back the Blue N.C., said. “And try and just give them something to just ease the burden that she’s going through right now.”
