RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. – A nonprofit group that supports state law enforcement officers is raising money for six trust funds for the children of an N.C. Highway Patrol trooper who was killed Monday night in a crash at a traffic stop.

N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper John Horton was conducting a traffic stop on Dusty Luke Beck, 26, of South Carolina about 9 p.m. Monday in Rutherford County when another trooper headed to the scene lost control of his car and struck Horton’s vehicle. Horton’s brother, James Horton, was behind the wheel of the vehicle that lost control, authorities said.

John Horton, a 15-year Highway Patrol veteran, and Beck both were killed.

The nonprofit Back the Blue N.C. says its online fundraising effort will help support John Horton’s wife and children.

“We have to set up trust funds for six children and also take care of the wife,” Gadi Adelman, chairman and media relations for Back the Blue N.C., told Spectrum News 1. “And try and just give them something to just ease the burden that she’s going through right now.”

The N.C. Bureau of Investigation is investigating the crash.

A funeral for John Horton is set for 5 p.m. Friday at the Foundation Conference Center at Isothermal Community College, according to Harrelson Funeral & Cremation Services. Burial will be private.
