RALEIGH, N.C. — A social justice activist in Raleigh says despite the guilty verdicts in the Derek Chauvin trial, there's still a long way to go in changing the justice system.
Kerwin Pittman has been a social justice activist in Raleigh for years. He said after the trial on Tuesday, he received several calls and texts, then again when a 16-year-old was shot and killed by police in Columbus, Ohio. He says hearing about that shooting was an extreme shock, and many people blame officer training as the culprit, but he believes there's more to it.
"In my opnion the training works fine. It's just utilizing the training when it comes to marginalized communities, and people who are not of marginalized communities. We see a lot of restraint from law enforcement when it comes to white individuals yet when it comes to marginalized communities restraint is zero to none," Pittman said.
He says for social justice change, people need four things: litigation, legistlation, education and protests.
He says as of now, he has not heard of any planned action or protests in downtown Raleigh or Durham in the near future.
