NORTH CAROLINA – President Donald Trump is planning a trip to western North Carolina during the first day of the Republican National Convention.

A White House official said the president will visit Mills River, North Carolina, near Asheville on Monday.

Delegates to the Republican National Convention will gather that same day about 100 miles away in Charlotte for one day of in-person meetings.

Trump plans to visit a Farmers to Families Food Box program site and talk about how his administration has helped families and farmers with the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, according to the White House.

"The President will tour Flavor First Growers and Packers, an organization that partners with Baptists on Mission to build the Farmers to Families Food Boxes, and see how the boxes are packaged and placed into refrigerated trucks and then delivered to families in need," the White House said.

The president's daughter, Ivanka Trump, and U.S. Department of Agriculture Sec. Sonny Perdue will join Trump on the trip, a White House official said. Perdue and Ivanka Trump have spearheaded the food assistance program, the White House said.

President Trump visited Mills River four years ago as a candidate. This will be Trump's 11th trip to North Carolina since he became president.

“I am incredibly excited to join the President in North Carolina as he sees first-hand the incredible work being done through our Farmers to Families Food Box program," Ivanka Trump said in a statement.

"With nearly 70 million boxes of nutritious, locally-sourced fresh fruit, vegetables, milk and meat delivered to date, we are deeply appreciative of our strong and innovative partners like Baptists on Mission and Flavor First Growers and Packers that allow us to continue the fight to feed our nation’s hungry, support our farmers and strengthen our workforce.”
